The ongoing pandemic has created not only a public health crisis, but also an economic one. Graduate students are entering the market facing uncertainty that has not been seen in recent history, with hiring freezes and budget cuts already announced in some companies, universities, and government agencies. This raises important questions for job candidates and employers alike:
- How is the job market likely to be affected?
- Should candidates be advised to delay their entry into the market, or go this year?
- How can students prepare?
Prospective employers – including universities, companies, and governments – are also thinking about how to navigate the pandemic.
This panel will discuss the outlook of the job market in 2020 and beyond. It will overview economics jobs in different sectors, and provide a sense of which employers are hiring this year. The panel will provide insight both for job seekers and hiring organizations to think through the job market during these challenging times.
