Katharine Abraham
University of Maryland

Katharine G. Abraham is Professor of Survey Methodology and Affiliate Professor of Economics with the Joint Program for Survey Methodology at the University of Maryland, and formerly Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

As the Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics for two four-year terms, from 1993 through 2001, Dr. Abraham instituted improvements in consumer, producer, and international price statistics, and employment and wage statistics. She laid the groundwork for the first U.S. Government survey of time use, and she established the only joint statistical agency advisory body, the Federal Economic Statistics Advisory Committee. During the public debate on the Consumer Price Index, Dr. Abraham steered a careful course of studying shortcomings and making revisions based on objective research. She expanded coverage of the prices of services in the Producer Price Index; instituted improvements in the Current Employment Statistics, including the substitution of a probability sample for the quota sample; accelerated delivery of employment and wage statistics; and took steps toward expanding coverage of wages and salaries in those programs.

Her research interests include the study of the labor market and economic measurement. She is co-author of the book Job Security in America: Lessons From Germany, co-editor of the book New Developments in the Labor Market: Toward a New Institutional Paradigm, and contributor of numerous articles to professional journals and edited collections. She has testified frequently before Congress.

 

Michael Armah
Bureau of Economic Analysis

Michael Armah joined the Bureau of Economic Analysis, National Income and Wealth Division, in 2002 as program manager overseeing the preparation of personal consumption expenditures (PCE) for services estimates. Before joining BEA, he spent 10 years at the Census Bureau’s Services Sector Statistics Division, where he worked as Section Chief (for half of his tenure) in the Current Services Branch with responsibility for much of the Service Annual Survey. As a Section Chief heI oversaw the implementation of North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) and subsequently, the implementation of the provisional North American Product Classification System (NAPCS) in the Service Annual Survey. While at the Census Bureau, he also worked in the Industry Classification Branch, where he contributed to the development of the new NAICS manual, and in the Retail & Wholesale Indicators Branch, where he worked as an industry analyst for the Advance Monthly Retail Sales and the Annual Retail Trade Surveys.

He has earned a bachelor’s degree in economics, with post-graduate studies in international transactions from George Mason University.

Richard Berner
Chief U.S. Economist
Morgan Stanley

Richard Berner is a Principal in Morgan Stanley's Equity Research Department, and has responsibility for U.S. economic and financial research activities.

A native of Boston, Massachusetts, Mr. Berner received a bachelor of arts degree in economics from Harvard College, and a doctorate in economics from the University of Pennsylvania. He conducted dissertation research under SSRC-Ford Foundation grants at both the University of Louvain, Belgium, and at the University of Bologna, Italy.

Prior to joining Morgan Stanley, Mr. Berner was Executive Vice President and Chief Economist at Mellon Bank Corporation, and a member of Mellon Bank's Senior Management Committee. Previously, he served as a Principal and Senior Economist for Morgan Stanley and a Director and Senior Economist for Salomon Brothers. He has also served as Economist for Morgan Guaranty Trust Company, Director of the Washington, DC office of Wharton Econometrics and Economist for the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. He has been an adjunct professor of economics at Carnegie-Mellon University and at George Washington University.

Mr. Berner is also a member of the Board of the National Association for Business Economics and a member of the Board of Advisors of Macroeconomic Advisers, LLC. He has been a member of the Economic Advisory Committee of the American Bankers Association, Chairman of the Economic Advisory Board of the Pennsylvania Bankers Association, a member of the Board of Directors and past President of the Economic Club of Pittsburgh, a member of the Advisory Board of the Center for Economic Development at Carnegie Mellon University's Heinz School, a member of the Board of Trustees of Sewickley Academy, and a member of the Finance Advisory Committee of the Quaker Valley School District. He has also served as a member of the Pennsylvania Legislative Joint Task Force on Exports.

David Berson
Vice President and Chief Economist
Fannie Mae

David W. Berson is Fannie Mae's Vice President and Chief Economist. In this capacity, he is responsible for managing the Economics Department; forecasting and analyzing the economy, interest rates, and the housing and mortgage finance markets; as well as advising Fannie Mae's Chairman and Senior Management Team on finance, economic, tax, and housing policy issues. He is also a senior participant in the company's strategic planning process.

Prior to joining Fannie Mae, Dr. Berson was Senior Economist at the U.S. League of Savings Institutions, Chief Financial Economist at Wharton Econometrics, Visiting Scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, and Assistant Professor of Economics at Claremont McKenna College and Claremont Graduate School. He has also been an instructor in the Business School at the University of Michigan and in the Economics Department at Villanova University. His government experience has included Staff Economist on the Council of Economic Advisers, as well as positions in the Office of Tax Analysis at the Treasury Department and in the Office of the Special Trade Representative.

Dr. Berson is a past-President of the National Association for Business Economics (NABE), was a long-time member of NABE's Board of Directors, and has been on the Board of Governors of the National Economists Club. He is a member of the advisory board for the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy at the University of Michigan, the Economics Department at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and the Business School at Howard University.

Dr. Berson is also on the Board of Directors of Crossway Community, a transitional housing project for homeless single-parent families in Montgomery County, Maryland. He recently finished a 6-year term as the Vice-Chair of the town council for Columbia, Maryland, and is currently the Chair of the Adequate Public Facilities Committee for Howard County, Maryland. Dr. Berson is a frequent speaker on national and state economic outlooks, housing and mortgage market conditions, and economic and housing policy to the media and to business and housing groups.

He has both a Ph.D. in Economics and an M.P.P. degree in Public Policy from the University of Michigan, and a BA in History and Economics from Williams College.

Beth Ann Bovino
Senior Economist
Standard & Poor's

Beth Ann Bovino is a senior economist at Standard & Poor’s, based in New York. In this position, she works with David Wyss, the chief economist, on S&P’s economic forecasts and publications, and co-authors the weekly Financial Notes and Weekly Economics Call. Beth Ann has created Industry Drivers reports for analyst research. She is quoted regularly in the press and has appeared on many major television programs. Further, she has written many articles for popular and professional publications.

Prior to joining Standard and Poor’s in February 2004, Beth Ann spent over ten years doing economic and market research with Sungard Institutional Brokerage, UBS Warburg, and the Federal Reserve.

Beth Ann holds a PhD in Economics from Columbia University, a Master's in International and Development Economics from Yale University, and a BS in Economics from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania

Mary Bowler

Mary Bowler attended Grinnell College and the American University. She has been an Economist for 15 years at the Bureau of Labor Statistics, working on the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (ES-202 program) and the Current Population (household) Survey.

Kathleen Camilli

Kathleen Camilli received B.A. degrees in both Economics and French from Douglass College, Rutgers University. She studied at Universite de Laval, Quebec, Canada and Universite de Paris III, VII, France. She earned an M.B.A. in Finance and an M.A. in French Studies from New York University.

A frequent commentator, author and speaker, Kathleen Camilli is well known as a strong communicator and translator of complex issues into understandable, actionable ideas. She appears regularly on CNN, CNBC, The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, Nightly Business Report and Bloomberg Business News. She has been quoted in the financial press, including The Wall Street Journal, New York Times and USA Today.

Ms. Camilli is on the Board of Directors of MassBank Corp., the Money Marketeers of New York University and the National Association of Business Economists (NABE). She is a contributor to Blue Chip Financial Forecasts. Ms. Camilli is a member of the Financial Women’s Association, the New York Women’s Bond Club, the Forecasters Club and the New York Association of Business Economists. Her civic activities include serving on the Board of the Epiphany School Foundation.

Michael S. Carliner
Staff Vice President, Economics
National Association of Home Builders

MICHAEL CARLINER is the Staff Vice President for Economics at the National Association of Home Builders, responsible for economic analysis and forecasting. He has done extensive research into the dynamics of national and regional housing markets and conducted studies of related subjects such as demographic trends, consumer preferences, use of building materials, structure of the home building industry, and housing finance. Prior to joining NAHB in 1984, Mr. Carliner was Director of Regional Real Estate and Construction Economics at Chase Econometrics. He has also served as Vice President of Regional Data Associates and Senior Economist at Dynamics Associates. Mr. Carliner studied Economics and Finance at the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a Research Fellow.

 

Patrick Casey
TTX Company

Patrick Casey is director of business forecasting and planning for TTX Company. Pat started his transportation career with Chessie System Railroads in 1983. He worked for Chessie and its successor, CSX, for 17 years in forecasting, market research and marketing. Pat joined TTX in his current position in May of 2000.

A native of Baltimore, Pat holds a bachelors degree in economics from Towson University and a masters degree in economics from the University of Delaware. He is a member of the National Association for Business Economic, the Chicago Association for Business Economics, the Intermodal Association of North America, the Intermodal Association of Chicago and the Midwest Foreign Commerce Club. Pat lives with his wife and three children in Lombard, Illinois.

Rob Edwards
Director, Statistics Department
International Monetary Fund

Rob Edwards commenced duty as Director of the Statistics Department on September 1, 2004. Prior to joining the Fund in 2004, Mr. Edwards was Deputy Australian Statistician, Economic Statistics, at the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). In this position he was responsible for all aspects of the ABS program of economic statistics including its economic censuses and surveys, national and international accounts, prices, public and private finance statistics, and statistics on international trade in goods and services.

Mr. Edwards joined the ABS in November 1968 and held senior executive positions in statistical and user services, corporate services, population and social statistics as well as economic statistics. He was a member of the ABS executive management team for over 20 years. He received the Australian Public Service Medal in 2004 for distinguished service in economic statistics in Australia, and in the international statistical community.

Mr. Edwards represented Australia in many international statistical fora. In 1995 he headed the United Nations Expert Group on Critical Problems in Economic Statistics; that Group's work has significantly influenced the work of the United Nations Statistical Commission since then. Mr. Edwards is a past Vice President of the International Association for Official Statistics.

Mr. Edwards is placing emphasis on ensuring the Statistics Department provides high-quality statistical services within the Fund as well as serving the national and international statistical communities. He is pursuing interests in the updating of the international standards for macroeconomic statistics; in training and technical assistance; and in the Fund's surveillance work through the Review of Standards and Codes (Data Module) and the Special Data Dissemination Standards (SDDS) and the General Data Dissemination System (GDDS).

Mr. Edwards, a citizen of Australia, holds a B. Comm (Honors) (Economics) from the University of Melbourne. He is married with two children.

Michael Englund
Principal Director and Chief Economist

Michael R. Englund is Principal Director and Chief Economist for Action Economics, LLC, which is the premier provider of real-time commentary and analysis for trading room professionals in the global bond and currency markets. Previously, he was the Chief Economist for MMS International, where he worked for over twenty years, pioneering the early stages of the real time commentary industry. For just over a decade ending in 2002, MMS International was owned by Standard & Poor's, where Mike held the title of
Chief Market Economist for Standard and Poor's, and where he served on the Standard and Poor's Forecast Council. Dr. Englund has a Ph.D. in economics and an M.A. in statistics from the University of California at Berkeley.

He also spent a year studying at the London School of Economics, and has a B.A. in economics from Middlebury College. In addition, Mike previously was on the Board of Directors for the National Association of Business Economics, was Chair of the NABE Financial Roundtable, and was President of the San Francisco Chapter of the NABE.

Refet Gurkaynak

Refet Gurkaynak is an Economist in the Monetary and Financial Market Analysis Section of the Division of Monetary Affairs. He has been at the Board of Governors since 2001, where he studies Macroeconomics, Monetary Economics, and Financial Markets.

He has a B.A. in Economics from Bilkent University, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Economics from Princeton.

 

John Haltiwanger
University of Maryland

John C. Haltiwanger received his Ph.D. from the Johns Hopkins University in 1981. After serving on the faculty of UCLA and Johns Hopkins, he joined the faculty at Maryland in 1987. He is a Research Associate of the Center for Economic Studies at the Bureau of the Census and of the National Bureau of Economic Research. His recent research has exploited the newly created longitudinal establishment data bases that are available at the Bureau of the Census. This research centers on the process of reallocation, retooling and restructuring in the U.S. economy and its connection to the business cycle. Publications include: "The Aggregate Implications of Machine Replacement: Theory and Evidence" (with Russell Cooper), American Economic Review, 1993; "Plant-Level Adjustment and Aggregate Investment Dynamics" (with R. Maurine Haver
Haver Analytics

Maurine is President and founder of Haver Analytics Inc., an economic consulting and information services company. Prior to starting Haver Analytics in 1978, she was an economist in the economic forecasting group of General Electric in New York, a member of the International Staff of Companie Bull General Electric in Paris and a consultant in the Foreign Currency Exposure Management Group of the Chase Manhattan Bank in London.

Maurine served as President of the National Association of Business Economists (1994-95) and now chairs the NABE campaign for Quality Economic Data that she initiated during her year as president. In her role as Chair of the NABE Statistics Committee, she testifies before Congress on statistical issues, conducts quarterly meetings which bring together producers and users of federal statistics and organizes seminars to help users better understand the statistics available from government and private sources.

Maurine chairs the Business Research Advisory Council of the Bureau of Labor Statistics and is a member of the Advisory Committee of the Bureau of Economic Analysis. She has served as secretary of the Forecasters Club of New York since 1992. She is a past president of the New York Association for Business Economics (1989-90), the Downtown Economists Club (1993-94) and the Money Marketeers of New York University (1998-99). She chaired the board of the Council of Professional Associations on Federal Statistics (COPAFS) during 2001-2003. She currently serves on the board of Mutual of America and is a member of the American Economic Association, the American Statistical Association and the National Economists Club.

Maurine holds a B.S. in Economics and Mathematics from Michigan State University, an M.B.A. from the Stern School of New York University and completed her oral exam for a PhD in International Economics at NYU.

Stuart Hoffman
Senior Vice President and Chief Economist
PNC Financial Services Group

Stuart G. Hoffman is senior vice president and chief economist for The PNC Financial Services Group and serves as the principal spokesperson on all economic issues for PNC. Recently, Hoffman was named by BusinessWeek as the most accurate economic and interest rate forecaster of 2004. In addition, he has been recognized as the second most accurate forecaster by the National Association for Business Economics and in The Wall Street Journal’s economic survey covering the 1988 to 2002 period.

Hoffman joined PNC in 1980 after a six-year tenure with the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. He became vice president and senior economist for PNC in 1987 and was elected senior vice president and chief economist in 1991.

Hoffman is frequently quoted in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Barron’s, BusinessWeek and USA Today. He is a regular guest on CNBC, CNN, Bloomberg TV, The Wall Street Journal Radio Report and CNN News Radio. He is regularly interviewed by the Associated Press and Reuter’s news wire services. He is often quoted in regional media such as the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Philadelphia Inquirer.

In addition, Hoffman has regularly participated in the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City Jackson Hole Symposium, where he discusses key economic issues with Chairman Alan Greenspan and other global monetary policymakers.

Hoffman is the vice president and a member of the Board of Directors of the National Association for Business Economics (NABE). He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Pennsylvania Partnership for Economic Education and the Economic Club of Pittsburgh--the local chapter of NABE.He is the past chairman of the American Bankers Association Economic Advisory Committee that met semi-annually with Chairman Greenspan and other Federal Reserve Board Governors.

Hoffman is a 1971 graduate of Pennsylvania State University. He received a master's degree in 1973 and a doctorate degree in economics in 1975, both from the University of Cincinnati, where he was a Charles Phelps Taft Memorial Fellow. In 2004, the University of Cincinnati honored him as a Distinguished Alumni.

Harry Homan

Harry Homan is currently Senior Director, Strategic Development, Fluor Corporation.

Fluor is one of the world’s largest publicly owned engineering, procurement, construction and maintenance organization, with annual revenues of approximately $10 billion.

Harry leads a team which identifies opportunities arising from changes in the external environment; looks at how to enhance the company’s overall competitive position; and coordinates the company’s strategic planning process. He also helps the business units test the robustness of their plans and develop strategic options, appraises enterprise risk and advises the corporation on portfolio issues.

Harry has a BS in chemical engineering from the University of Illinois and an MBA from the University of Southern California. His responsibilities at Fluor have included economic forecasting, marketing research and planning, technology development, finance & administration, business & competitor intelligence and strategic planning. Prior to joining Fluor he spent two years with DuPont in product and process development.

Harry is currently chairman of NABE’s Corporate Planning Roundtable. He is active in a variety of professional associations including the National Business Economic Issues Council and Association for Strategic Planning, and previously served on the Conference Board Association of Strategic Planning Executives and as chairman of the Southern California section of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

Kurt Karl
Swiss Re

Kurt E. Karl is head of Swiss Re’s Economic Research and Consulting, North America. As such, Dr. Karl has responsibility for the North American part of Swiss Re’s “sigma” insurance industry research. In addition, he supports Swiss Re’s strategic planning and provides internal consulting on products and economic risks. Finally, he supplies insights and forecasts on the U.S. and global economies to Swiss Re, Conning Asset Management and Fox-Pitt, Kelton for use in a variety of corporate decisions, including asset management. He is an expert on the U.S. and global economies with extensive experience and knowledge of foreign markets and has lived and worked in Europe, Africa and Asia. Dr. Karl is a contributor to many forecasting surveys, including those of the Wall Street Journal, Blue Chips, Bloomberg and Reuters. He is widely quoted and appears regularly on CNBC and Bloomberg TV.

Prior to joining Swiss Re, Dr. Karl was chief international economist at WEFA, Inc., an economic forecasting firm located near Philadelphia. He has a B.A. from the University of Oregon, a M.Sc. from the London School of Economics and a Ph.D. from Princeton University.

Andrea Keenan
AM Best

Andrea Keenan is a Senior Financial Analyst at the A.M. Best Company. She specializes in country risk and its affects on insurance industries and therefore its impact on insurance company ratings. She previously worked as US Economic Analyst for Toyota Motor North America in New York and as an Analyst for International Technology and Trade Associates in Washington, DC. She received an M.A. from The American University’s School of International Service and B.A. from York College of Pennsylvania.

 

John Kleinhenz
Kleinhenz and Associates

Jack Kleinhenz, PhD, is CEO of Kleinhenz & Associates, a business and economic consulting firm based in Cleveland, Ohio. The firm specializes in industry studies, regional economics, labor market issues strategic planning and business plan development.

Jack has over 20 years of broad-based experience working with a variety of firms including fortune 500 companies. He is known for translating economics and information into clear explanations and action. Jack speaks on business and regional economic issues and regularly called upon for his expertise by the local and national media. Formerly with the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, Jack recently served as chief economist and consultant to the Greater Cleveland Growth Association, the nation’s largest chamber of commerce. He teaches economics as a faculty member of CASE’s Weatherhead School of Management and serves as senior regional economist for the Center for Regional Economics Issues.

A graduate of John Carroll University, Jack earned his M.A. and Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Notre Dame. He has completed post-graduate programs at Weatherhead School of Management and Carnegie Mellon University. In 1995, Jack was named one of John Carroll University’s Top 50 School of Business Graduates. Previous faculty appointments include the University of Notre Dame and John Carroll University.

Jack is a member of the Governor of Ohio’s Council of Economic Advisors, board member of Notre Dame College, a corporate director for Beverage Distributors, Inc, Cleveland, Ohio and a former board member of the National Association for Business Economists (NABE). He is chairman of NABE’s educational foundation and a member of NABE’s statistics committee that meets regularly with federal policymakers and statistical agencies. Pete Kretzmer

Recently reaching his tenth anniversary at Bank of America, Peter Kretzmer analyzes developments in the national and world economies, assessing the implications for economic growth, inflation, and the financial markets. He also forecasts the likely course of monetary and fiscal policy, and conducts research on economic and financial issues. He was the joint recipient, along with Mickey Levy, Bank of America’s chief economist, of the 2004 Lawrence R. Klein Award for Blue Chip Forecast Accuracy, an award that spotlights the best forecasting performance among the more than 50 leading economists who contribute to the Blue Chip Survey. A wide range of bank clients, the bank’s Treasury management group, and traders and salespeople across a broad spectrum of financial products use his research and forecasts.

Kretzmer joined NationsBanc Capital Markets, Inc. in June 1994, following two years of involvement in the day-to-day implementation of monetary policy by the Open Market Desk at the New York Fed. From 1986 to 1992, he was a member of the faculty of the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California. He also has served as a Visiting Scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City and as a staff economist at the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System in Washington, D.C. He received his MBA and PhD degrees in Economics and Finance from the University of Chicago.

L. Douglas Lee

Douglas Lee founded Economics from Washington in 1999 after 16 years in the securities industry. During that period he served as Chief Economist for HSBC Securities, NatWest USA, and Washington Analysis Corporation. While employed by NatWest and HSBC, Dr. Lee was responsible for the US economic forecasting and policy analysis for their global research teams.

From 1981 to 1983 he was a senior economist at Data Resources Inc. and manager of their Defense Information Service. Prior to that he served as Chief Economist and Research Director for the Joint Economic Committee of Congress. He has published numerous articles, is quoted regularly in major news organizations and magazines, and appears frequently on CNBC, CNN, Nightly Business Report, Bloomberg and Reuters. He received his B.A. from Rice University, M.S.F.S. from Georgetown University, and Ph. D. from George Washington University

 

Rosemary Marcuss

Rosemary Marcuss is the Deputy Director of the US Bureau of Economic Analysis and the President of NABE. She was a member of the Board of Directors of NABE from 2000 to 2003.

From 1983 to 1998, she was the Assistant Director for Tax Analysis, U.S. Congressional Budget Office (CBO), where she was responsible for Congressional tax receipts forecasts and tax policy analysis. She has also been: Senior Manager and Economist, Data Resources, Inc.; Assistant to the President, American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees; junior staff member, Council of Economic Advisers; Director, National Tax Association; Member: District of Columbia Tax Revision Commission.

She has a Ph.D. University of Maryland, where she had a National Science Foundation Fellowship.

 

Duncan Meldrum
Chief Economist
Air Products, Inc.

Duncan Meldrum is the Chief Economist for Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., a $5.5 billion industrial gas and chemicals company serving customers in over 30 countries. As Chief Economist, he assesses the impact of the economic environment on the company’s performance for the executive management team and develops global economic assumptions for the company’s operating plans. He provides operating groups with pricing assistance, contract support and market analyses. He also serves as the company’s economics spokesperson.

He received a B.S. degree from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1973, a M.S. degree in Operations Research from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in 1974, and a Ph.D. in Economics from Lehigh University in 1992. He is a member of the Advisory Committee to the U.S. Census Bureau. He serves as a director on the boards of the APCI Federal Credit Union and the nonprofit Parkette National Gymnastics Center. He is a past president of the National Association for Business Economics. His other professional associations include the Conference of Business Economists, the National Business Economic Issues Council, and the American Economics Association.

Gregory Miller

Gregory Miller is Vice President and Chief Economist with SunTrust Bank, Inc. He completed his undergraduate and graduate Economics degrees at Florida State University and has been a practicing economist, forecaster, and teacher for over 20 years.

Prior to joining SunTrust, Mr. Miller was on the faculty of the College of Business Administration at the University of South Florida in Tampa. Mr. Miller now serves on the USF Business College Board of Advisors.

Before joining USF, Mr. Miller served two Florida Governors in the Florida State Economist's Office in Tallahassee.

As SunTrust Banks’ Chief Economist, Mr. Miller's responsibilities include forecasting the national economy, particularly as it affects interest rates. He advises corporate and bank boards of directors. He sits on committees charged with interest rate setting, corporate investment, and benefits policy. He is a policy advisor for Wealth Management and Corporate Investment Banking groups. Mr. Miller also evaluates markets for, and represents SunTrust in, regulatory matters concerning potential mergers and acquisitions.

In addition to his regular SunTrust duties, Mr. Miller serves on the Georgia Governor’s Counsel of Economic Advisors and the Atlanta Mayor’s Counsel of Economic Advisors.

He is Past-Chair of the Economic Advisory Committee of the American Bankers Association, Past President and Board Member of the Atlanta Economics Club and was President and Founding Director of the Atlanta Economics Foundation.

 

Norman Morin
Senior Economist

Norman Morin is a senior economist at the Federal Reserve Board in the
Industrial Output Section of the Division of Research and Statistics. His
primary responsibilities include forecasting the industrial sector, estimating capacity utilization, and researching topics related to industry output and capacity utilization.

He received his undergraduate degree in mathematics from the University of
Michigan and his Ph.D. in economics from the University of California at
San Diego. He is in his eighth year at the Federal Reserve Board.

Patrick Newport
Principal
Global Insight

Patrick Newport's tracks the investment and construction sectors for Global Insight's Macroeconomic Service. He also, manages Global Insight 's long-term forecasts, and works on consulting projects. Patrick joined Global Insight in July 1998. Prior to joining Global Insight, he worked as a research economist for Washington State's Department of Revenue. He later served as a senior economist for the Office of the Forecast Council of Washington State. Mr. Newport received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1993. He also holds a B.A. in Business Administration and an M.A. in economics from Louisiana State University. Patrick was born and raised in New Orleans, and now lives in Arlington Massachusetts, a Boston suburb.

 

Sumiye Okubo

Sue Okubo joined the Bureau of Economic Analysis in June 1997 as Associate Director of Industry Economics. She oversees the preparation and analysis of the input-output accounts of the U.S. economy, gross product originating accounts, and supplementary industry satellite accounts.

Prior to joining BEA, Dr. Okubo was Director of the Office of International Macroeconomic Analysis, Office of the Chief Economist, U.S. Department of Commerce and served an Assistant National Intelligence Officer for Economics at the National Intelligence Council. Her private sector experience includes serving as Manager, R&D Strategy Analysis, GTE Laboratories, 1980-1982, and from 1978-1979, as economist at General Electric Corporate Research and Development. Dr. Okubo received a Ph.D. in economics from Tulane University.

Robert Parker

Government Accountability Office

Since July 2000, Bob Parker has served as Chief Statistician of the U.S. Government Accountibility Office where he directs GAO's work on the operations of the federal statistical system and advises GAO staff on the use of statistics and statistical methodologies in the conduct of audits and evaluations of government programs and operations. Before joining GAO, he served for five years as Chief Statistician of the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), the Department of Commerce agency that provides a comprehensive picture of economic activity through the preparation and analysis of international, national, and regional economic accounts of the United States. He also served as Associated Director For National Accounts for 12 years.

Bob is a member of the National Business Economics Issues Council and the Conference of Business Economists and serves on the Statistics Canada National Accounts Advisory Committee. He is also a member of NABE's Statistics Committee.

Bob has been an author and editor of the statistics columns in Business Economics, NABE's quarterly journal, since 1995. He has authored and co-authored many articles in the Survey of Current Business, BEA's monthly journal, including articles on treating expenditures for software as investment, chain-type measures of real output and prices, and revisions to GDP.

He was selected by the New York Association for Business Economics as the recipient of the Butler Award for 2000 and by NABE and the Washington Statistical Society as the recipient of the Julius Shiskin Award for 1999. He is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association.

He received a B.A. in mathematics from Duke University and did graduate work in economics at American University.

Noël Perry

Noël Perry directs Schneider National’s industry-leading analysis of the international logistics environment. This effort includes strategic work on customer logistics economics, North American transportation demand, carrier competition and ground-breaking research on truck driver supply and demand. Schneider National also applies tactical research tools to the business development process: surveying customer perceptions, locating prospects and quantifying logistics value. In addition Noël manages Schneider National’s extensive relations with the logistics analysis community, from security analysts to analytical vendors to trade associations.

Noël joined Schneider National in 2003 after twenty-five years of senior research positions at Cummins Engine Company and CSX Transportation. He is the rare economist with a specialty in transportation and logistics. His innovative work in national truck demand modeling, modal price competition and driver labor economics are in wide-spread use. He is a member of the Transportation Research Board, the Transportation Research Forum, the National Business Economists;’ Issues Council, the Council Of Logistics Management and, in his spare time, the Society For Baseball Research.

Noël holds degrees in Architecture from the University Of Pennsylvania and City Planning from Harvard University and is a graduate of Girard College, a unique primary and secondary school in Philadelphia. He was a veteran of the Viet Nam war. In his spare time he is a gardener, singer, golfer and amateur World War II historian. He and his wife, Ginny, live in Green Bay. Wisconsin.

 

Steve Reed
Bureau of Labor Statistics

Steve Reed received a B.A. in Economics from the College of William and Mary and a M.A. in Economics from the University of Maryland. He joined the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 1998 and over the past six years has done extensive research on the Consumer Price Index, including co-creating the CPI-U Research Series. He is also a frequent speaker on the CPI and related matters. When not working he is often chasing around his five-year-old daughter and three-year-old son.

Steve Rosenthal

Steven Rosenthal is a supervisory economist with the Division of Major Sector Productivity at the Bureau of Labor Statistics. He supervises the production of Multifactor Productivity measures for major sectors of the U.S. economy. He has been with the Office of Productivity and Technology at the Bureau since 1980.

 

Howard Savage

Howard Savage is a Supervisory Economist at the US Department of Commerce. He received a BA from Oklahoma City University, an MAS from The Johns Hopkins University and a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. He has earned a Masters Certificate in Project Management from the George Washington University. He has taught at the University of Oklahoma, Hood College, The Johns Hopkins University and the University of Maryland. His background includes work in the private sector as an owner of a mortgage banking company, a portfolio manager in an investment firm, a certified financial planner and registered general securities principal in an investment firm, and extensive financial consulting with over 300 growing firms in the Mid-Atlantic area and Latin America. He has also done real estate and financial research for the Governor’s Office of the State of Texas, the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the Scottish Office (Great Britain). His current work with the US Department of Commerce involves analyis of mortgages, residential mortgage markets, and financial analysis of multifamily properties.

 

Steven A. Sharpe

Steven A. Sharpe is a Senior Economist in the Capital Markets Section,
Division of Research and Statistics, at the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve Board. He has been at the Fed since 1986, where his research interests are Financial Markets, Asset Pricing, and Corporate Finance.

He has a B.A. in Economics, Math, from the University of Illinois (C-U), 1981. He has a Ph.D. in Economics, Stanford University, 1986.

John Silvia

Dr. John Silvia joined Wachovia in February 2002 as chief economist for the Bank.  Previously, John worked on Capitol Hill as senior economist for the U.S. Senate Joint Economic Committee and chief economist for the U.S. Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee.  Prior to that, he was chief economist of Kemper Funds and managing director of Scudder Kemper Investments, Inc.  Before joining Kemper Funds, John worked for Harris Bank and taught economics at Indiana University.

John holds a B.A. and a Ph.D. degree in economics from Northeastern University in Boston and has a Master’s degree in economics from Brown University in Providence, RI.

John serves as a member of the Blue Chip Panel of Economic Forecasters and also serves on an informal advisory group for the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia.  He is a member of the Economic Advisory Committee at the American Bankers Association and is President of the Charlotte Economics Club.  In the past, John has served on economic advisory committees to the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, and the Public Securities Association.

In addition, John is Treasurer and a member of the Board of Directors for The Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina, a Charlotte civic association. He is also a member of the Business Advisory Committee for the City of Charlotte and he serves on the President’s Council for Charlotte’s Central Piedmont Community College.

Shelly Smith

Shelly Smith is an economist with the National Income and Wealth Division (NIWD) of the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), U.S. Department of Commerce (USDOC). She began working at BEA in May of 1997. At BEA, she serves as a member of the team responsible for the review and analysis of the quarterly gross domestic product (GDP) estimates. Prior to joining NIWD, Ms. Smith was an economist with the Federal Branch of BEA’s Government Division where she developed estimates of several components of the government accounts, including Federal Government spending on research and development and the current surplus of Federal Government enterprises.

Ms. Smith received her Masters Degree in Applied Economics from the Johns Hopkins University, and her Bachelor’s Degree in International Studies and in Economics from Frostburg State University in western Maryland.
 

Charles Steindel

Charles Steindel is a Senior Vice President in the Business Conditions Function. He oversees the Group's analysis and forecasts of U.S. economic conditions. His research interests include consumer spending and saving and productivity growth. He served as president of the Money Marketeers of New York University and the Forecasters Club of New York. He received his bachelor's degree from Emory University and his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institure of Technology.

 

Anne Vandenabeele

Anne Vandenabeele is an economist of Capital Strategy Research, Inc. (CSR) with US and global macroeconomic research responsibilities. Ms. Vandenabeele joined The Capital Group Companies in 2000 as a participant in "The Associates Program." She holds an MA (with honours) in economics from the University of Edinburgh, U.K. and an MPhil in economics from the University of Oxford, U.K. She is a member of the National Association of Business Economists and is based in Los Angeles.

Michael Warren
Toyota Motor Company

Michael Warren was recently promoted to National Manager of the Latin American Research & Area Marketing Group at Toyota Motor North America, with offices in Miami and New York. The group consists of a four-person team in New York City that provides political economic forecasts to help determine automotive sales forecasts in the region and a two-person area marketing team in Miami. The group also analyzes how trade agreements will impact vehicle sourcing in the region. Dr. Warren has been with Toyota in 1998.

Prior to coming to Toyota, Michael worked at Polyconomics as the Latin American strategist from 1997 to 1998. His job was to alert portfolio managers and Fortune 500 companies of investment opportunities and provide timely political economic risk analysis that would affect equity and bond prices in the region. He also assisted the company expanding the client base to Latin America.

Mr. Warren also served as a military intelligence analyst for the US Army Reserve for 22 years; he was called up three times to active duty over the past seven years. His last tour occurred after the 9/11 terrorist attacks when he spent more than one year at the National Ground Intelligence Center.

Dr. Warren holds a Ph.D. from Tulane University and wrote his dissertation on the Brazilian industrial sector. He has taught courses at Tulane University and William Carey College. He has published articles/op-eds in the Wall Street Journal and professional journals, has spoken at conferences sponsored by the Council of the America, Inter-American Dialogue, and EM Warburg Pincus. He has also served as a board member on the Inter-American Advisory Group from 1999-2000.

Richard Wobbekind

Richard Wobbelind is currently Associate Dean for External Relations, Associate Professor of Business Economics and Finance, and Director Business Research Division, Leeds School of Business, University of Colorado at Boulder.

Previously, he has worked at the Center for Business and Economic Forecasting at the University of Colorado and the Institute for Regional Affairs at Bucknell University. His work at both centers focused on regional economics and forecasting.

He is currently Chair of the NABE Regional Roundtable. He is Past President, Vice President and Secretary/Treasurer for the Denver Association for Business Economics (a NABE chapter), and has organized numerous sessions at the fall and spring conferences over the past three years.

He is currently Secretary/Treasurer AUBER (Association of University Business and Economics Research), and is Past President, AUBER. He has a BA Economics, Bucknell University, Lewisburg, PA; and MA and Ph.D., University of Colorado, Boulder, CO.

 

 

Paul Zeisset

Paul Zeisset directs marketing activities for the 2002 Economic Census. Paul is Special Assistant in the Census Bureau's Economic Planning and Coordination Division.

For over 30 years, Mr. Zeisset has worked to make census data accessible and useful. His work has ranged from supervising publication of the U.S. Statistical Abstract to designing public-use microdata from household censuses and survey; and from writing guides and indexes to developing software for Census Bureau CD-ROMs.

Mr. Zeisset's current work focuses on communicating the availability and uses of Economic Census data. He has developed a wide variety of data displays and reference material on the web and in print. He has authored a number of articles about data use and the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS).

Mr. Zeisset heads a working group that produced State and County QuickFacts at the Census Bureau's website, and is also involved in other efforts to improve and integrate data products from the Census Bureau.

Mr. Zeisset was awarded the Census Bureau's Bronze Medal for distinguished service in 1998, the Census Bureau’s award for Outstanding Customer Service in 1997 and 2001, and the Director’s Award for Innovation in 1999 and 2001.

Mr. Zeisset holds an MA in psychology and statistics from the University of Texas at Austin.
