Stuart Hoffman
Senior Vice President and Chief Economist
PNC Financial Services Group

Stuart G. Hoffman is senior vice president and chief economist for The PNC Financial Services Group and serves as the principal spokesperson on all economic issues for PNC. Recently, Hoffman was named by BusinessWeek as the most accurate economic and interest rate forecaster of 2004. In addition, he has been recognized as the second most accurate forecaster by the National Association for Business Economics and in The Wall Street Journal’s economic survey covering the 1988 to 2002 period.

Hoffman joined PNC in 1980 after a six-year tenure with the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. He became vice president and senior economist for PNC in 1987 and was elected senior vice president and chief economist in 1991.

Hoffman is frequently quoted in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Barron’s, BusinessWeek and USA Today. He is a regular guest on CNBC, CNN, Bloomberg TV, The Wall Street Journal Radio Report and CNN News Radio. He is regularly interviewed by the Associated Press and Reuter’s news wire services. He is often quoted in regional media such as the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Philadelphia Inquirer.

In addition, Hoffman has regularly participated in the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City Jackson Hole Symposium, where he discusses key economic issues with Chairman Alan Greenspan and other global monetary policymakers.

Hoffman is the vice president and a member of the Board of Directors of the National Association for Business Economics (NABE). He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Pennsylvania Partnership for Economic Education and the Economic Club of Pittsburgh--the local chapter of NABE.He is the past chairman of the American Bankers Association Economic Advisory Committee that met semi-annually with Chairman Greenspan and other Federal Reserve Board Governors.

Hoffman is a 1971 graduate of Pennsylvania State University. He received a master's degree in 1973 and a doctorate degree in economics in 1975, both from the University of Cincinnati, where he was a Charles Phelps Taft Memorial Fellow. In 2004, the University of Cincinnati honored him as a Distinguished Alumni.

Refet Gurkaynak
Economist
Federal Reserve Board

Refet Gurkaynak is an Economist in the Monetary and Financial Market Analysis Section of the Division of Monetary Affairs. He has been at the Board of Governors since 2001, where he studies Macroeconomics, Monetary Economics, and Financial Markets.

He has a B.A. in Economics from Bilkent University, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Economics from Princeton.

Pete Kretzmer
Senior Vice President and Senior Economist
Bank of America

Recently reaching his tenth anniversary at Bank of America, Peter Kretzmer analyzes developments in the national and world economies, assessing the implications for economic growth, inflation, and the financial markets. He also forecasts the likely course of monetary and fiscal policy, and conducts research on economic and financial issues. He was the joint recipient, along with Mickey Levy, Bank of America’s chief economist, of the 2004 Lawrence R. Klein Award for Blue Chip Forecast Accuracy, an award that spotlights the best forecasting performance among the more than 50 leading economists who contribute to the Blue Chip Survey. A wide range of bank clients, the bank’s Treasury management group, and traders and salespeople across a broad spectrum of financial products use his research and forecasts.

Kretzmer joined NationsBanc Capital Markets, Inc. in June 1994, following two years of involvement in the day-to-day implementation of monetary policy by the Open Market Desk at the New York Fed. From 1986 to 1992, he was a member of the faculty of the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California. He also has served as a Visiting Scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City and as a staff economist at the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System in Washington, D.C. He received his MBA and PhD degrees in Economics and Finance from the University of Chicago.

Michael Englund
Principal Director and Chief Economist
Action Economics

Michael R. Englund is Principal Director and Chief Economist for Action Economics, LLC, which is the premier provider of real-time commentary and analysis for trading room professionals in the global bond and currency markets. Previously, he was the Chief Economist for MMS International, where he worked for over twenty years, pioneering the early stages of the real time commentary industry. For just over a decade ending in 2002, MMS International was owned by Standard & Poor's, where Mike held the title of Chief Market Economist for Standard and Poor's, and where he served on the Standard and Poor's Forecast Council. Dr. Englund has a Ph.D. in economics and an M.A. in statistics from the University of California at Berkeley.

He also spent a year studying at the London School of Economics, and has a B.A. in economics from Middlebury College. In addition, Mike previously was on the Board of Directors for the National Association of Business Economics, was Chair of the NABE Financial Roundtable, and was President of the San Francisco Chapter of the NABE.
