An ad hoc group of data users has mounted a petition drive against the proposed elimination of the International Labor Comparisons (ILC) program in the Labor Department’s fiscal 2011 budget, which would save $2 million a year.  Compiled by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the ILC program produces what are regarded as high quality international comparisons on labor force, productivity, hourly compensation, and prices for many industrialized countries and several developing countries.  Judging by BLS’ own count of “hits” to data series available on its website, the ILC statistics are as popular as the agency’s current employment statistics (CES) program, with 1.5 million hits each in 2009. Robert Bednarzik, a professor at Georgetown University, and Edwin Dean, former BLS associate commissioner for productivity and technology and now an economics consultant, and are leading the effort to convince members of Congress not to eliminate the ILC program. There's more information on the petition drive online.
