NABE’s new Real Estate/Construction Roundtable held its inaugural teleconference December 3, drawing more 60 participants. Ken Simonson, chief economist, Associated General Contractors, is the roundtable chair. Sara Rutledge, Invesco, moderated the session on "The Problem in Nonresidential Real Estate: How Big, How Bad, How Soon?" Speakers included Sam Chandan, Real Estate Economics, and Doug Poutasse, National Council of Real Estate Investment Fiduciaries. A free podcast of the teleconference is available online.
Since its release on November 23, the final NABE survey of the year, the November Outlook, has received outstanding media coverage, according to Melissa Golding, NABE press officer. NABE President Lynn Reaser did interviews about the survey with CNN Radio, Associated Press Radio, the Wall Street Journal Radio Network, ABC Radio Network (national service), CBS Radio News (national service), the FOX Business Channel, ABC Television News, and Diario Financiero, a financial newspaper in Santiago, Chile. Outlook Survey Committee Chair Richard DeKaser was interviewed by Steve Liesman on CNBC's Squawk on the Street, by Kathleen Hays on Bloomberg Radio, and by John Dimsdale on the Marketplace Morning Report. He also spoke to Time Magazine, and did an interview with Reuters TV on November 25 that ran as part of a story they did on the U.S. employment outlook. The interview received very wide distribution, as Reuters TV sends content to 500 broadcast clients in the US and abroad and 200 Web clients worldwide, and it was also posted on reuters.com. Did you miss a teleconference? Check out podcasts available for recent sessions, including the December 10 teleconference on "U.S. Manufacturing Outlook” conducted by the Manufacturing Roundtable. Speakers were Daniel J. Meckstroth, chief economist, Manufacturers Alliance/MAPI, and Thomas Runiewicz, principal and senior economist, IHS Global Insight. They examined the current state of the manufacturing sector and discuss the outlook for the coming year. Look for registration information on the podcast at the Manufacturing Roundtable.
The Regional Utility Roundtable hosted a teleconference December 15 on "State Fiscal Challenges Heading into 2010." Speakers included Scott Pattison, National Association of State Budget Officers, and Don Boyd, Rockefeller Institute. For registration information on the podcast go to the RURT events page.
NABE members are encouraged to participate actively in the 2010 Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado, October 9-12 by submitting a paper for the NABE Edmund A. Mennis Contributed Papers Award. E-mail an abstract of no more than 250 words (one page, double-spaced) of a proposed paper (with no author identification) and a biographical (also one-page) sketch no later than March 15, 2010, to Tom Beers, NABE executive director, at tbeers@nabe.com. By April 19, a Selection Committee appointed by Business Economics’ Editor will review the anonymous abstracts, selecting up to eight abstracts. The authors will be requested to provide completed papers for review by June 21. The guidelines for preparation will be the same as those for all manuscripts submitted to Business Economics. These guidelines are printed in Business Economics, and they are also available on the NABE website. or on request from the Editor of Business Economics. There is a $1,000 prize for the best paper.
Nominations are invited for the annual Julius Shiskin Memorial Award for Economic Statistics, given in recognition of unusually original and important contributions in the development of economic statistics or in the use of statistics in interpreting the economy. NABE cosponsors the award with the Washington Statistical Society, and the Business and Economics Statistics Section of the American Statistical Association. The award will be presented with an honorarium of $750 plus additional recognition from the sponsors. A nomination form and a list of all previous recipients are available on the ASA Website. Completed nominations must be received by March 5, 2010.
