Welcome to NABE’s newest student chapter at the University of California-Irvine (UCI), as approved by NABE Board on May 20.  According to UCI Chapter President Kerry Dang, the student organization started to take shape during the fall of 2008.  She reported “one of our professors announced that NABE might be interested in establishing a student chapter at UCI, and asked if we would be interested. Her announcement was received with much enthusiasm. By the next academic quarter, we established a new student organization on campus.”

Dang says there are 12 members in the UCI chapter, and officers have set a goal of reaching 40 members by the time the fall semester begins. “We plan to hold biweekly meetings (5 meetings per quarter) starting the second week of the school term.  For some of these meeting we will invite professional economists come and talk to the students about what the future as an economist can hold for them.  We also plan to hold meetings where students in the economics program come in and share their internship experiences with the members: how to obtain internships and what life is like during these internships.  Finally, our chapter will engage in some community service—e.g., provide tutor services for student in economics or math,” Dang reported.
