Chapter News

The Los Angeles Chapter will host NABE President Chris Varvares as a guest speaker on March 18.  His topic for the luncheon speech is  "How Deep a Recession: Policy vs. Pessimism."  Candice Hynek, president of the LA Chapter, also reports the chapter will award a $500 scholarship to a graduating high school student who has demonstrated an outstanding competency in the subject of economics, and who is also planning to pursue an undergraduate degree in economics.  “This is an essay contest in partnership with the California Council on Economic Education.  We will present the winner at the LA NABE Annual Robert T. Parry Award luncheon at the Los Angeles Branch of Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco in June,” she said.

This spring the Richmond (Va.) Chapter will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a special program in the newly renovated boardroom at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, according to Dave Jolley, chapter president. The chapter has often held meetings and programs at the Fed Bank and will return to that venue on a regular basis. In January, the chapter held a forum on “the State of the Virginia Economy.”

The Hartford Area Business Economists (HABE) has held five successful meetings since last September and will award college scholarships this spring to four students across the state of Connecticut, said Todd Martin, chapter president. The scholarships will be awarded based on an essay competition.

The National Economists Club (NEC), the chapter in the nation’s capital, reports growing popularity of podcasts offered on its website for its extensive luncheon speaker series, according to Stuart Mackintosh, a member of the chapter’s board of governors. The Event Materials pages on its website also have links to speakers’ presentations and slideshows.

Sara Johnson, the NABE board member who is co-chair of the board’s Committee on Chapters and Roundtables, recently hosted a conference call with several chapter presidents.  For more information contact her at sara.johnson@ihsglobalinsight.com.
