Get Connected Offers Networking, Skills Session

As it begins its second year, NABE’s Get Connected program for early and mid-career professionals will host a networking reception on the eve of the March Policy Conference, set for March 1-3 at the Key Bridge Marriott in Arlington, Va.

Get ConnectedAll are invited to attend the networking event on Sunday, March 1, at 7 p.m. at Piola restaurant, in Arlington, not far from the hotel. “We encourage everyone to come and meet other Get Connected members and find out how to get involved,” said Chris Swann, former NABE board member and coordinator of the program.

Membership in Get Connected has topped 100 and the team leaders encourage others to join and become involved in one of several aspects of the program.

Get Connected has organized a skills session—the Data Visualization Workshop—immediately after the luncheon on Tuesday, March 3. The workshop will demonstrate how economists can integrate interactive visualization with analytical techniques to answer questions related to business and economic analysis.

Also at the Washington Policy Conference, Get Connected will sponsor a poster session, displaying six chosen proposed papers representing research in progress.  Papers selected could be published in Business Economics or another journal.

New Issue of GC Gazette Available

Issue Number 2 of the Get Connected Gazette has just been released and it’s full of details for upcoming events, the mentoring program, and reports from teams working on different aspects of the program.

Chapter teams, for example, are looking into ways to expand the network of student chapters, strengthen links to other organizations, and add more online resources.

Team participants are needed for all teams, including mentoring, career development, membership/marketing/Web, programs, chapters, and the GC management team.  Contact either Chris Swann (Christopher.swann@bea.gov)  or Debbie Cason (cason@macroadvisers.com) for more information and to volunteer.

Mentor Program Popular

Meanwhile, the Get Connected mentor program is becoming quite popular, Swann pointed out.   As of mid-February, more than a dozen matches of mentors and mentees had been completed, with several others to be done in coming weeks.  Kim Flood, a NABE board member, is the coordinator of the mentor program.

Designed to help grow and support lasting professional relationships between newer and more experienced NABE members, the mentor program invites applications from members with varying degrees of experience, from entry-level professionals to those with 40+ years working in the field of economics.

If you are not sure whether to apply as a mentor or mentee, Get Connected team members suggest you apply for both.  Click here http://nabe.com/getconnected/mentor.html for more information on the program.
