Chapter News

With spring comes the awarding of special honors and scholarships by several NABE chapters around the country.

KingLaurie J. King received the 2nd Annual Dr. Robert T. Parry Award presented by the Los Angeles chapter at a June 17 luncheon.   A former NABE board member and president of the LA chapter in 2001-2002, King was recognized for her contribution to the community, the LA chapter, and to NABE.   Parry, a former president of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco and long-time NABE member, presented the award to King, who is a senior writer for Capital Guardian Trust Company. As part of her work on the NABE board, King helped to create a standing Committee for Chapters.

And turning to scholarships…

The Hartford Area Business Economists (HABE) awarded scholarships to five students from higher education institutions around Connecticut, according to Alissa DeJongs, chapter president. The scholarships were awarded to students with superior academic achievement, essay, letters of recommendation, and potential contribution to the fields of economics and business. The winners were each awarded a scholarship of $500 at the April and May HABE meetings, and one honorable mention was awarded for $250.

The Dallas Fort Worth Association for Business Economics (DABE) honored three local students for their excellence in economics during a luncheon in late April, according to DABE President Jeanette Rice, Verde Real Estate.  With essays judged by an independent panel of professional economists, DABE confers the Arthur A. Smith Outstanding Student Awards in memory of Smith, a charter member of the association in the early 1960’s while he was chief economist of First National Bank of Dallas. “We have found this program to be a tremendous way to stay connected with universities and for students to network with our members,” Rice said. NABE Board member Ken Simsonson, chief economist, Associated General Contractors of America, Judy Smith Moore, daughter of Arthur Smith, presented the awards. The NABE Foundation supported the Dallas competition with a grant. For more details on the DABE award winners and other news about the Foundation, watch for upcoming editions of the Foundation’s Newsletter.

Celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, the National Economists Club, NABE’s chapter in the nation’s capital, will host its annual dinner on Nov. 17. Martin Feldstein, president of the National Bureau of Economic Research and Harvard University professor of economics, will be the speaker.

Several chapters are gearing up to participate in NABE’s new Get Connected program for early and mid-career professionals.
