Read John Qualls' account of the Riyadh attacks of 5/12/03

One Year Later

It has been a year since we either found ourselves at the World Trade Center, or glued to our television sets on that fateful day.

NABE invited members to submit remembrances about Sept. 11 in observance of the first anniversary of the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington for publication in NABE News and here on nabe.com. The response was overwhelming! Because of space limits we could not publish all messages in the print version of NABE News. We included all we had room for and listed them by the date received. All responses to our 9/11 request appear below, listed alphabetically. We want to hear from as many members as possible and will gladly add remembrances to this page as they are received. Please send remembrances to nabe@nabe.com.

To keep the download time manageble, we have split the list alphabetically by last name

One Year Later Remembrances A-K

One Year Later Remembrances L-Z

Following are three longer pieces that were written for other purposes but are appropriate for this page too.

A Florida author is writing a book about what happened within the hotel that day. Read more about it here.

The original stories from NABE members caught in the Marriott World Trade Center, gathered last year, are here.

9/13 - Just been alerted to this story, with a scary picture of the Marriott, from the New York Times. (Free, but registration required).

The photo of the Marriott, in the New York Times story above, was taken by photographer Bill Biggart, who was killed soon after that photo, in the collapse of the north tower. Read more about his actions that day

Long-time NABE member John Qualls, has lived and worked in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, for the past decade. For the first seven years, he worked for the U.S.-Saudi Joint Commission on Economic Cooperation in Riyadh. After JECOR shut its doors in 2000, he was invited to stay and work directly for the Saudis as a senior economic advisor to the Saudi Ministry of Finance and National Economy (which he describes as “the equivalent of the U.S. Treasury Department). He was at home in Riyadh on May 12 when terrorists attacked Western housing compounds in city. Here is his “Riyadh Night to Remember,” which we have posted with his permission.
