The 2000 Census: Products, Issues, and Private Sector Use

In 2001, the Census Bureau will begin delivering the first of the data and mapping products derived from the Decennial Census. Learn from what will be available and when. The Bureau is also releasing major information from the American Community Survey (ACS) in 2001. The ACS will deliver socio-economic data throughout the decade, and the current plan is for the ACS to replace the census long form in 2010. Learn about the current status of the ACS and what will be available. Finally, hear what the implications of all these new data are for the private sector. Who uses census information, how it's used, and how users will adjust to the ACS.

Bert Ely, President, Ely & Company, Inc.

Government Sponsored Enterprises (GSEs) have been the subject of much discussion, from the halls of Congress to the editorial pages of major
newspapers. Supporters argue that GSEs capture positive externalities
that private enterprises ignore. Further, GSEs promote public policy goals
more cheaply and efficiently than other government programs. Opponents argue that GSEs are inefficient and disrupt the normal functioning of free markets, costing society more than any benefits they may provide.
David W. Berson, Vice President and Chief Economist, Fannie Mae, will
present the argument in support of GSEs. Bert Ely, President, Ely & Company, Inc., will make the case against GSEs. Bernard M. Markstein, III, President, Markstein Advisors, will moderate the session. Come join us for what promises to be a lively and informative roundtable discussion.

A short background paper (8 pages--6 pages text, 2 pages charts) on GSEs' role in the mortgage market was recently released by HUD, the mission regulator for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The paper may be downloaded at: http://www.huduser.org/publications/polleg/gse.html
