Over the past three years, the United States has seen the largest depreciation of household real estate assets in at least the past 60 years. Figure 4 tells the story succinctly: household real estate wealth growth (net of outstanding mortgages) turned negative on a year-over-year basis starting in the third-quarter of 2006 and that decline exceeded 20 percent through all of 2008.
