Residential Investment and GDP

The Graph of the Week shows the percentage of GDP coming from residential investment. The graph comes from the April 2007 Business Economics article "Housing Activity and Consumer Spending: The Link Is Not As Strong As Often Supposed", by Jonathan McCarthy and Charles Steindel. From the article:

Although the growth rate of residential investment during this period was not unusual, the level of housing market activity was extraordinary. This reflects the fact that the recent expansion of residential investment occurred without a significant bust preceding it. Consequently, the share of residential investment exceeded six percent of GDP in 2005 and early 2006, its highest since early 1950s, as shown in Figure 2. Other measures of single family housing activity have set new records....
