The 1-hour teleconference will conclude with a Q&A session from the audience.

Tom Higgins, Standish
Tom is the Global Macro Strategist for Standish. He is responsible for developing views on the global economy and making relative value recommendations among global bond markets, currencies, and sectors. Before joining Standish in 2010, Tom was employed as the Chief Economist for Payden & Rygel Investment Management in Los Angeles and served as International Economist at The Conference Board. Tom received his Ph.D. and M.A. degrees in Economics from Fordham University and holds a B.A. in Economics from Drew University. Tom has eighteen years of experience analyzing financial markets. Higgins is a member of both the American Economics Association and the National Association of Business Economics (NABE). Tom was President of the Los Angeles Chapter of the NABE from 2006-2007. Higgins is a past board member of the Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation and the California Council on Economic Education. Tom was the 2010 Recipient of the Robert T. Parry Award for Exemplary Contributions in the Field of Economics.
Diane Swonk, Mesirow Financial
Diane Swonk is a senior managing director and chief economist for Mesirow Financial, a diversified financial services firm based in Chicago. As one of the most respected economists in the world, she is frequently called upon by policymakers and business leaders from Washington to Tokyo. Diane joined Mesirow Financial in 2004 after 19 years with Bank One Corporation and its predecessors. She started her career with the First Chicago Corporation in 1985 and quickly moved up the ranks, proving herself as one of the top regional economists in the country. During her tenure with First Chicago, Diane published several nationally acclaimed studies as well as her first book, The Passionate Economist: Finding the Power and Humanity Behind the Numbers. Diane sits on several advisory committees to the Federal Reserve Board, its regional banks and the Council of Economic Advisers for the White House. Most recently, she served two consecutive terms on the Congressional Budget Office's panel of economic advisers. As one of the most quoted economists in the financial press, Diane is seen regularly on national and international television, and her commentary can be read in top financial news publications throughout the world. In addition, she serves as a clinical professor for DePaul University's highly-rated evening MBA program. Diane is currently a member of the Council on Foreign Affairs, serves on the Chicago Conservation Center's Advisory Board, is on the sitting committee for the University of Chicago – Graduate School of Business, and is an advisor to the Economic Department for the University of Michigan. She is also involved extensively with the Economic and Executives' Clubs of Chicago. Diane has also served on the Joffrey Ballet Board and chaired the City of Chicago's Climate Change Finance Committee. Diane is past president of the National Association for Business Economics (NABE), a title that Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan and several other Federal Reserve presidents have also shared. Diane was the youngest to serve as president in the association's history and continues to dedicate much of her time to improving the quality and timeliness of economic data, a critical aspect of policymaking. Diane has earned many awards throughout her career. She was rated as one of the most accurate economic forecasters in 2010 by MSNBC, named a "Fellow" of NABE for her outstanding contributions to the field of business economics and was listed as one of the "top forecasters in the country" by the Wall Street Journal. In addition, Today's Chicago Woman named her "Top Woman in Finance in Chicago," the Chicago Sun-Times called her "one of the most influential women in business in Chicago" and she was designated "Business Leader of the Year" by the YWCA of Metropolitan Chicago. Diane earned her bachelor's and master's degrees in economics with top honors from the University of Michigan as well as a master's degree in finance and strategic planning with top honors from the University of Chicago.
David Semmens, Standard Chartered Bank
David is the US Economist at Standard Chartered Bank and has been named a “Bloomberg Best” for his forecasting of key economic indicators, specifically the US interest rates, housing sector, labor market, consumer behaviour, and retail sales. David advises key multinational corporate clients on the outlook for the US. He frequently provides analysis of the US on Bloomberg, Fox Business, CNBC, NHK, and NDTV. He is regularly quoted in the Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, and New York Times. David started his career with Standard Chartered Bank London in 2005. He has extensive experience in cross-functional divisions, such as Asset Backed Securities, Group Market Risk, Derivative Documentation, and Asset Liability Management. He moved to New York in 2007 to further promote the firm’s research and strategy capabilities. David has an M.Sc. in Economics from the University of Warwick, where he received an Economic and Social Research Council 1+3 scholarship. He has a B.Sc (Hons.) in Economics, also from the University of Warwick. David is a CFA charter holder, FRM designation holder, and CAIA designee. Guy Caruso, CSIS
Guy F. Caruso is a senior adviser in the Energy and National Security Program at CSIS, having served as executive director of the CSIS Strategic Energy Initiative from 1998 to 2000. Prior to rejoining CSIS he served as administrator of the Energy Information Administration (EIA) from July 2002 to September 2008, EIA is the statistical agency within the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) that provides independent data, forecasts, and analyses regarding energy. Before leading EIA, Caruso had acquired over 30 years of energy experience, with particular emphasis on topics relating to energy markets, policy, and security. He first joined DOE as a senior energy economist in the Office of International Affairs and soon became director of the Office of Market Analysis. Other leadership roles at DOE included director of the Office of Oil and Natural Gas Policy in the Office of Domestic and International Energy Policy and director of the Office of Energy Emergency Policy Evaluation. Prior to joining DOE, Caruso worked at the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) as an international energy economist in the Office of Economic Research. In addition, before joining EIA, he was also director of the National Energy Strategy (NES) project for the U.S. Energy Association (USEA). During this time, he spearheaded the USEA publication Toward a National Energy Strategy, which was released in February 2001, and a follow-up study entitled National Energy Strategy Post 9/11, which was released in July 2002. In January 2008, he was awarded the French National Order of Merit.
Caruso has also worked at the Paris-based International Energy Agency (IEA), first as the head of the Oil Industry Division, where he was responsible for analyzing world oil supply/demand and developments in the oil industry, and later as director of the Office of Non-member Countries, where he directed studies of energy-related developments in emerging economies. Caruso holds a B.S. in business administration and an M.S. in economics from the University of Connecticut. He also earned an M.P.A. from Harvard University.
Adam Sieminski, Deutsche Bank
Adam Sieminski is the chief energy economist for Deutsche Bank, working with the bank’s global commodities research and trading units. Drawing on extensive industry, government, and academic sources, Mr. Sieminski forecasts energy market trends and writes on a variety of topics involving energy economics, climate change, politics, and commodity prices. From 1998 to 2005, he served as the energy strategist for Deutsche Bank’s global oil and gas equity team. Mr. Sieminski was the senior energy analyst for NatWest Securities in the United States from 1988 to 1997, covering the major U.S. international integrated oil companies. He received his undergraduate degree in civil engineering and his master’s degree in public administration from Cornell University. He is a senior fellow and ex-president of the U.S. Association for Energy Economics and also served as president of the National Association of Petroleum Investment Analysts. He is a member of the National Petroleum Council (NPC), an advisory group to the U.S. secretary of energy, and helped author the NPC’s global oil and gas study, Hard Truths. In addition to his affiliation with the CSIS, he is an advisory board member of the Global Energy and Environment Initiative at Johns Hopkins/SAIS. He has also served as chairman of the Supply-Demand Committee of the Independent Petroleum Association and as an advisory member of the Strategic Energy Task Force of the Council on Foreign Relations. He is a member of the London, New York, and Washington investment professional societies and holds the chartered financial analyst (CFA) designation.

Chris Varvares is a Senior Managing Director of Macroeconomic Advisers, a company he co-founded with Joel Prakken and
Laurence Meyer as Laurence H. Meyer & Associates in 1982. Mr. Varvares has roughly 30 years of experience in macro-economic forecasting and policy analysis, both as a principal of Macroeconomic Advisers (1982 to present) and as a member of the staff of the President's Council of Economic Advisers (1981-1982). While at the Council, he served as a member of the U.S. delegation to the OECD in April 1982.
Mr. Varvares served as president of the National Association for Business Economics (NABE) during 2008-2009, served as president of the St. Louis chapter of NABE, and is a member of the American Economic Association. He is a member of the New York State Economic and Revenue Advisory Board, serves on the Bureau of the Census Advisory Committee, participates in the meetings of the Outside Consultants to the Congressional Budget Office, and has been a panelist for the World Economic Forum.
He and the other principals of Macroeconomic Advisers serve as consultants to key agencies of the U.S., Canadian, Japanese, and U.K. governments, major trade associations, and private corporations and are widely quoted in the business and financial media. The firm is recognized as among the most accurate forecasters of the U.S. economy. A 2006 study by the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta found that Macroeconomic Advisers had the best forecasting track record of any forecaster in the Blue Chip Economic Indicators panel over the 19 years included in the study. The firm also won the 2006 Annual Forecasting Award of the National Association of Business Economics and twice has won the Annual Forecasting Award for the highest forecast accuracy among participants in the Blue Chip Economic Indicators, and would have been a three-time winner of the award if not for a rule that precluded winning in two consecutive years. Macroeconomic Advisers is also a prominent participant in the debates over the macroeconomic effects of federal budget and tax policy, and monetary policy.
Mr. Varvares holds a B.A. in Economics from The George Washington University and received his graduate training (ABD) in Economics from Washington University in St. Louis, where he was also a member of the adjunct faculty.
Michael R. Englund, Principal Director and Chief Economist, Action Economics, LLC
Mike co-founded Action Economics in 2003, which is a real time global bond and foreign exchange consulting firm, with fourteen economists and analysts working from four countries to produce a 24-hour daily stream of market analysis and insight. The Action Economics consultancy service is used by the major banks, brokerage houses, hedge funds, and money managers in all the world’s major financial centers as a key source of independent and credible market analysis.
Before Action Economics, Mike worked for 21 years as Chief Economist for MMS International where he was a pioneer in the real-time financial markets commentary industry. Under Mike’s leadership, MMS expanded the breadth and depth of the MMS Treasury product and launched a broad array of Currency and debt market products.
During Standard & Poor’s ownership of MMS, Mike held the title of Chief Market Economist for Standard & Poor’s for over a decade, and served on the Standard and Poor's Forecast Council. Mike is a frequent guest on CNBC, Bloomberg TV and Fox Business News, and is widely quoted in the financial media.
Mike has a Ph.D. in economics and an M.A. in statistics from the University of California at Berkeley. He studied at the London School of Economics and has a B.A. in economics from Middlebury College. In addition, Mike previously was on the Board of Directors for the National Association of Business Economics, was Chair of the NABE Financial Roundtable, and was President of the San Francisco Chapter of the NABE.
Anne Ramstetter Wenzel, M.A., is Principal with Econosystems, an economics and market research firm located in Menlo Park, California. Econosystems assists small businesses and independent consultants with the research and writing of market analyses for business planning and strategy; survey design and implementation; and valuing economic damages in civil law suits. Ms. Wenzel provides market and economic outlook speeches and presentations for local business and nonprofit organizations.
Prior to founding Econosystems in 1999, Ms. Wenzel was staff economist for the Chemical Economics Handbook in the Chemical Marketing Research Center at SRI International, Menlo Park, California. Ms. Wenzel is President of the Silicon Valley Roundtable Chapter of the National Association for Business Economics (SVRT NABE), and is an advisory board member and past president for the San Francisco chapter of NABE. She is also an adjunct faculty member Menlo College (Atherton, California), where she teaches Managerial Economics. Ms. Wenzel received her B.A. and M.A. degrees in Economics from San Francisco State University, is a Certified Business Adviser for the Silicon Valley Small Business Development Center, and is currently writing The Entrepreneur's Guide to Market Research, to be published in January 2012.
